Martha's Vineyard vs

Game Date: October 5, 2007

Enrollment: Martha’s Vineyard: 791 / Hull: 417

Stadium: Hull’s stadium is referred to as “The Gut” because of its unique location on the very tip of a peninsula that juts into the Atlantic Ocean. The stadium holds just over 500 people, but you won’t find a more enchanting view anywhere in the country. From the home bleachers, one can look southwest across the football field and Massachusetts Bay to the tree-lined coast of neighboring Peddocks Island. To the northwest, a look across the Boston Harbor reveals the Boston skyline. A turn to the right and George’s Island is just one mile to the north. Don’t be surprised to see planes flying overhead into Logan Airport or large tankers slowly making their way up the channel.

Football History: This game marks the first time that Martha’s Vineyard and Hull have faced each other on the gridiron.

Game Day Travel: Every football team has to travel some distance for away games, but Martha’s Vineyard’s 80-mile trek from Oak Bluffs to Hull is a bit unique. The Vineyarders begin their trip by taking a ferry across the Vineyard Sound (the body of water that separates the island from the mainland). Once they reach the mainland at Falmouth, the team boards a bus that takes them north across the mainland and onto the Nantasket Peninsula. The game takes place at 5:30pm so that the Vineyarders can get back to Falmouth in time to catch the final ferry of the evening at 9:30pm.

About Hull: The city of Hull is located in Plymouth County, MA on Nantasket Peninsula. The city is connected to the mainland via a slim stretch of land leading into the town of Cohasset via Nantasket Ave. Hull is also a leader in the implementation of wind power technology. Roughly 12 percent of Hull’s energy needs are fulfilled by wind power, earning the city the Department of Energy's Wind Power Pioneer Award. One of the city’s two 150-foot windmills (technically “wind turbines”) towers over the football field, churning out energy for Hull’s 11,050 residents.

Interesting Notes: Of the eight members of the National Honor Society at Hull High School, seven are on the Pirates football team, and five are team captains.

During the game, take note of Martha’s Vineyard players that have a purple stripe on their helmet. It signifies that they are members of the “Purple Pride Club.” A Vineyarder football player may earn his purple stripe for excellent play on the field, tremendous effort at practice, top academic performance from the previous school year, or the top bench press at the team’s summer lift-a-thon event.
